Trait Leader

An animal that ranks in the top percentile of its breed for a specific EBV or ASBV trait, often highlighted in sale catalogues and sire summaries.

A trait leader is an animal — typically a sire — whose Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) or Australian Sheep Breeding Value (ASBV) for a particular trait places it within the top percentile band of the breed. Breed societies publish percentile band tables that show where an animal's breeding values sit relative to the breed population. Animals ranking in the top 1%, 5%, or 10% for a given trait are considered trait leaders and are highly sought after by breeders targeting improvement in that specific area.

Trait leader status is a powerful marketing tool for stud producers. Being able to state that a sale bull is a "top 1% growth trait leader" or a ram is in the "top 5% for number of lambs weaned" provides a clear, credible benchmark that resonates with buyers.
